DP Customs 79 Cafe Racer

DP Customs 79 Cafe Racer

Harley-Davidson ironhead
Arizona-based DP Custom Cycles specializes in Ironheads and Evos, usually turning them into “kick ass bobbers”. So this ’79 Harley is a departure for shop owner Justin Del Prado: low-set and unpainted, it has more of a café racer look. Del Prado has detailed the process: his latest custom “started out as a stock bike and was torn apart, so all the reusable pieces could be cleaned and detailed. Many parts were discarded to make room for the new setup. I wanted an all-steel café tank rather than fiberglass, and ended up finding the tank on eBay. It’s an Italian Benelli tank and the metal was perfect, so we were able to do a raw steel theme.” Del Prado hand-machined and clear coated the tank, and built the seat pan and rear fairing. “We distressed the finish on the primary and cam covers to give them an aged look, along with any other little parts we could.” Read More »

slab city riot 2

One day/night only.Nov 6th, 2010.

The Range at Slab City, Niland, CA (Salton Sea)

Saturday afternoon till the sun comes up Sunday morning.

Lots of ice cold beer, provided by Pabst Blue Ribbon.

Free Camping is primitive, just a flat dirt field.

No vending but you can bring stuff to toss from the stage in between the bands.

Taco cart will be serving food (dinner and breakfast),
or bring your own and BBQ!

The last one was a blast. You can read about it here.

Warning: this is not your typical contemporary "biker" event. If you want to sit around in a parking lot and look at chromed-out baggers and shop for doo rags, you ain't gonna dig it. This is in the dirt, punk rock, party time in the bowels of hell. It's gonna be weird and just a little dangerous. You've been warned. Do not show up expecting something else.

sickbike zone

James Roper-Caldbeck is an Englishman who rebuilds old Harleys in Denmark. This bike is a 1947 Flathead, and over 62 years it has been though many transformations. When James bought it, he realized the frame, engine, gearbox and oil tank were original. “It came with the SU carb, then I added the Morris Magneto, chopped-down speedster handlebars, 19-inch aluminum rims and a Empi stinger exhaust for old time’s sake.” James wanted to keep the feel of a ‘working machine’, so he painted as few parts as possible: the metallurgy is what you notice on this motorcycle, rather than a Hot Wheels paint job. The tank is stained with Gun Blue, a chemical used to protect shotguns. You can see more of James’ painstaking work here. [Via Jockey Journal.]
